The majority of older adults will experience some changes in their sensory capacity
(vision, hearing, smell, taste and peripheral sensation) as a normal part of aging.
Some sensory changes, for example changes in hearing, can severely impact an
         older person's communication skills.
To learn more about sensory changes in older adults visit
www.GeroNurseOnline.org and select "Sensory Changes" from the Geriatric Topic
        menu.

Persons over age 80 have fewer interventions for symptom management and                     older palliative care patients are more likely to suffer and die from chronic
illnesses preceded by lengthy period of decline and functional impairment.  They
are also at a higher risk for developing multiple chronic, life-threatening diseases
(cancer, stroke, heart disease, respiratory diseases).
To Learn more about Palliative Care for Older Adults visit
www.GeroNurseOnline.org and select "Palliative Care" from the geriatric topic                 menu.

Elder abuse and neglect, or elder mistreatment, is an enormous health care                         problem that can lead to long term health consequences, including death. Elder                 mistreatment includes physical, psychological, financial, and sexual abuse, as well               as caregiver neglect and self-neglect. Between one and two million Americans age             65 or older have been injured, exploited, or otherwise mistreated by someone on             whom they depended for care or protection.
To learn more visit www.GeroNurseOnline.org and select "Elder Mistreatment
and Abuse" from the geriatric topic menu.
